Jarrett's magnetic use of all possible improvisational techniques is kind of a show off more than it is a free-flowing unified work. There are definite earworm highlights, but there are also entire swaths that serve only to show his skill over the instrument.

Out of every experimentation Jarrett has made, with countless different arrangements and rinteresting ideas, what ultimately reveals itself as perhaps the best formula for his music was rstripping down to the most minimal jazz instrumentation - the piano. Throughout this one-hour - rand partly improvised - solo, he walks between themes with such incredible agility, flow and rcohesion. The concert, of course, showcases great virtuosic talent, but it is, above all, for me rat least, a work of timeless beauty, authenticity and sheer brilliance. In the end, The Köln rConcert might actually be the most impressive and poignant jazz performance on the piano ever rrecorded.
