| PortalofPerfection Just finished a full Illyria discog spin. Amazing band. First album was great. Second one is amazing (though a bit long, felt like it could have been a Part 1/Part 2 album), third one was different but still really good, almost as good as the first one. From the singles off the new one, I think it's going to be their best yet.

 | VlacDrac Sup Hawks, I have a question, do you think the environment of bands is a decisive factor to take into consideration as far as influence on a style can take? More specifically, I've been listening to Slam and Beatdown bands from NYC which they sound way heavier than other contemporary bands from the rest of the US. I've never been to NYC but, it seems it used to be a lot tougher 30 - 40 years ago and it seems to me like a factor that made bands sound heavier. Just my two cents.

'free jazz' is a thorny term that basically means free harmony, or freedom to play whatever tf you like outside of key or chord sequences, and normally has a specific group of artists attached with it lol - poor ol charlie parker was dead by the time it came around, but he didn't need free harmony to rip like a hero

Coltrane and Miles are both sick****s who fully deserve all the praise they get but sometimes the shadow they cast over the genre blots out a lot of other amazing stuff. There?s an intimidating breadth and depth to the genre but thats also half the fun ? there?s always something else to listen to! Don?t let anyone tell you jazz isn?t meant to be an enjoyable or joyful artform!
