Dream Theater, what a great band! This is their 2nd newest album.

The first disc of this album has 5 songs on it.

1. Glass Prison-This song is almost 15 minutes long, it's loud, fast, energetic, your basic metal song. It totally rocks.
5/5

2. Blind Faith-I don't see what's so great about this song. I think it really drags on and on and on, like they felt as though they needed to make it long, just to live up to their reputation. If it was about 5 minutes long, it would be great.
2/5

3. Misunderstood-This is a ballad. It's slow, and calm. I abolutely love it, but it too suffers from repetition. They tried to drag it on too long, and it really brings down the quality of the song.
3/5

4. The Great Debate-This track is about stem cell research. It, similiar to the Glass Prison, is just a rockin' song.
4/5

5. Dissapear-This is the shortest song on the album, at about 6 minutes. It's a simple, emotional ballad. Awesome stuff.
5/5

The whole second disc is one song. With a duration of almost 43 minutes, it's also DT's longest song.

1. 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence-It's separated into 8 chapters. I think this song is amazing, even though a lot of people disagree with me. It really shows Dream Theater's full capacity to play a wide range of musical styles. It goes from fast-paced metal (Test that Stumped Them All) to beautiful balladry (Goodnight Kiss). IMO, this is a great song.
5/5

All in all, this album gets a 3/5 from me. It was the first DT album I heard, and really got me into the band. It's also a lot more mainstream-friendly than DT's other stuff, but still good.

The Great Debate OWNS live.

I like this album, lots of people don't but there's still some great moments. The one thing that irks me is the Overture to 6DOIT, I don't like the strings done by Rudess. It would own if they had hired an orchestra, but that probably would've put them over budget. Dream Theater overtures should be kept in the style of Overture 1928. :thumb:

6DOIT is my least favorite DT album, but that does not make it a bad record. My favorites-Blind Faith, Solitary Shell

I'd give it 4/5.

Must-listen moments:

The Glass Prison (the whole song is absolutely incredible. I don't know how you can have a 15 minute song and not have it get boring, but they did it).

The intro/main piano part in Disappear is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

The riff from War Inside My Head... amazing, a complete contradiction to the other styles used in 6DOIT, but somehow it still fits in.

cheers for the review
i heard the glass prison and was honestly blown away.... after about 2 minutes (you know the bit with the real heavy guitar riff and the double bass pedal) is like... wow. anyways i may go pick it up now but i dont have any cash... ****.
and i love the quote... "This is the shortest song on the album, at about 6 minutes"... that is a mammoth song for most bands haha

Not bad, Blind Faith is great though, especially the solos

Pretty good album, not their best obviously but still good.

I agree with LordWorm there about Blind Faith, I think its a great song.

The second disc is good but the Overture does drag on a bit. And it has a good mix of styles - heavy and technical (TTTSTA) contrasting with light and catchy (Solitary Shell, my favourite section).

4/5 I'd say. But a low 4 if I'm considering the other albums.

Firstly, I LOVE Blind Faith. I think it's one of the best songs on the album. The line, "Sorry, you must excuse me, I painted my own Mona Lisa" just speaks.. eternal vigilance.

In any case, this is probably my favourite Dream Theater album. Glass Prison, Blind Faith, Misunderstood, The Great Debate... I'm not too fond of Disappear... But pretty much every song on this album is excellent.

i'd give the music for 'the glass prison' 5/5 but the lyrics dont seem to fit in some parts, so 4/5 for the lyrics.

Listening to it now

I'm about 1 minute away from the end of Blind Faith. Great stuff.

I'd give it 2/5. I was REALLY disappointed. So unfocused, corny in places, masturbatory...

Normally I'd disagree with this judgement of Dream Theater, but in this particular album, I agree. Definitely not one of their best..

Kaden, I have found something musically that we disagree on.. Blind Faith is possibly my favorite from the album.

Good review though, it's not DT's best effort, although worth the buy if you want to listen to something a little out of the ordinary.

The songs are much better live, by the way. Especially The Great Debate.

I agree, I'd give the album most of its points for The Glass Prison alone.

There are however certain parts of thw album I really like. I think Blind Faith is a great song. I could care less about Disappear. Misunderstood could be great but it drags on a bit too long. There points in the song, and the album, where it seems to just wander without any certain direction. The Great Debate is a pretty damn cool song. There's nothing so memorable, but it's a good song. If it wasn't for The Glass Prison, I really wouldn't care at all about the first disc.

Disc two...I have mixed feelings on it. It definitely screams of the obvious talent Dream Theater has. I think the Overture is great and has some memorable parts, although it does seem to drag a bit. Most people will say "Pffff, it's no Overture 1928". Well, I would agree with that, but then again, how can you meet all the hype and expectations right after making SFAM? For those of you who have played in your school band or orchestra, you'd know that anybody would love to be able to play a song like the overture for school. That alone makes me enjoy the song. I think the whole second disc is great in that you go from a soft ballad one second to what was (before the release of Train of Thought of course) some of the hardest and heaviest Dream Theater songs released. I actually really like the reprise of About To Crash and I think that would've made a better ending. Losing Time makes a good finale, but coming from Dream Theater, I'd expect a mindblowing song as the finale.

Overall, I'd give the album a 3 maybe. Relative to other DT albums, it's not as strong, but standing alone, it's still a good album. Again though, IMO, The Glass Prison makes/saves this album.

I would give 6DOIT 4.5/5.

Great album. IMO it is their greatest album in terms of songwriting and the transistion from metal to ballad. The first disc has some real heavy stuff mixed with some great ballady stuff, really a lot more experimental with different sounds, especially Petrucci and Rudess. The second disc is just amazing.

Not really related but does anyone notice how the last 3 DT albums smoothly transist from one to the other? The rain from the end of SFAM starts the 6DOIT album, then that long fade out at the end of 6DOIT slowly fades back in at the start of TOT. Try putting all the albums into something like Winamp SFAM first, then 6DOIT, then TOT and tell me what you think. Sorry if this has already been done, but I found it and I am pretty proud :D.

I noticed that too, but they can't continue to do that. TOT ends decisively.

A bit late, but I gave 6DOIT (Disk 1) another listen last night. I haven't touched this cd in months, but after listening to it, I enjoyed it. Sure, it's not as good as SFAM or Awake (IMO), but The Glass Prison and Dissapear are really stunning. That melody in the beginning of Dissapear is so fvcking awesome. That song owns live.
